History     top

During my 1999 Appalachian Trail Thru Hike I was keeping an online journal. I ran into an ethical dilemma with my digital camera. I didn't want to post photos of other hikers without their permission. I didn't want to ask everybody for permission either. I really wanted to include the other hikers on the website so my family and friends could see what the trail life was really like. I pondered it for a couple weeks. I thought it would be nice to solve the problem by creating an online photo directory. It seemed like a great idea. I ran it by some of the veteran hikers that I have tremendous respect for, Baltimore Jack, Lone Wolf, and Duff Buster. I also shared my idea with my fellow thru-hikers. Everybody said it would be a great idea. At this point I was in Erwin, Tn.

So from Erwin to Damascus, I thought about how I could make it happen? How could I get the photos and setup the site? There were lots of questions and problems ahead but it seems like a great idea. After a week in Damascus working through some of the problems, I decided to create the hiker directory. The birth of the Hiker Directory was Trail Days 1999. For the rest of my hike, I collected the information of the hikers I met as well as a photo. In Vernon, NJ I had a book printed up and with the support of Baxter State Park; it was placed in the Ranger Station at Katahdin Streams Campground.

After I finished I began the process of entering the information and uploading the photos. I had collected approx. 300 hikers information and photos. The book at Katahdin Streams had a few hundred more.

Hyper, who had also hiked in '99 and even hiked several hundred miles south, began helping collect information and photos. She was a tremendous help, she had lots of photos and lots of contacts. In 2000, I wanted to keep up with the directory but I didn't have the time. I was deeply involved with improving TrailJournals.com. The directory didn't develop because there wasn't the trail support that I had given it in 1999.

With a lot of thought and two years worth of knowledge, I have redesigned the directory. I have been working on ways of having the trail support that is needed for the photos but nothing is set up yet.
Currently it is a web-based project but I hope to get a few spots along the way to collect photos.

Using the Directory     top

The Directory is setup to be used through the index page. From this page you can browse the pages in the directory. Lists of the hikers are being developed as well as an index of the photos. I am also creating options for browsing, number of records on the pages, etc. I'm also developing a Letter page navigation instead of the numbers currently used.

You can add yourself automatically. After you have entered your information, you can edit your information or add another hike. It is all automatic. The only part that can't be done by you is the photo. If you email a photo, I will add it, or if you have a photo, you can mail it to me and I'll scan it for you.

Thanks     top

My thanks goes to all the hikers of 1999. This would not have been possible without all your support. Hyper has spent many hours entering and collecting information. She is the reason there is a southbound section.

There are a few who helped encourage me when I was debating the idea. Duffbuster, Lone Wolf, Baltimore Jack, Sunshine East and Funk That were the first few that I brought up the idea. Without their advice this would have never materialized.

Also the kind help of Mountain Man and Comet of Damascus helped me materialize and begin the process of developing the database. Their help was extremely valuable.

And Mat Olsen, Leif 98, without his offer to develop this, it would have never happened. I couldn't hike and develop at the same time. Thanks Mat, for the weeks of work you put in when I was hiking.

Thanks Everybody!
